Wisconsin libraries have near universal Wi-Fi access.

State Superintendent Tony Evers recently announced that nearly all Wisconsin residents can access wireless internet at their local libraries. According to data collected by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, 345 libraries were wireless capable by the end of 2008, giving access to 97 percent of the state’s population.

In the announcement, Evers focused on the importance of quality internet access for those in the job market:

“Our citizens look to public libraries for access to up-to-date technology, especially now,” said Evers. “Since many employers receive applications exclusively on-line, job-seekers absolutely need the Internet to search and apply for work. Job-seekers also utilize on-line materials for things like test preparation and resume creation.”

Though the help of WDPI, 93 Wisconsin libraries added wireless internet access in 2008 and 21 additional libraries plan to provide access in 2009. According to the department, internet use at libraries has increased steadily since the economic downturn began.

Wired Wisconsin recognizes the importance of high-speed internet access—especially in today’s economic climate.  We will work to promote policies that expand high-speed internet opportunities throughout Wisconsin.

UPDATE: All Marathon County Public Libraries offer wireless internet.
