Partner Profiles: Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance
Tell us about your organization.
The Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance was established as a nonprofit corporation to support the development of bio-based renewable energy, power, and products in Wisconsin. By bringing the appropriate players to the table, the WBIA helps grow the bio-economy in Wisconsin, concentrating on a specific series of campaigns targeted at the most fertile growth opportunities in Wisconsin.
The Alliance builds on the great work done by leaders already a part of this sector, and creates an atmosphere for continued success. The Bio Industry Alliance brings together university, private sector, and government officials to coordinate bio-economy development efforts and identify opportunities for collaborative work.
What kinds of technology does your organization utilize?
“Bio power” refers to the generation of power and electricity from biomass resources and can be as simple as burning waste products, as is occasionally done today, or it can involve advanced gasification technology that increases efficiency and improves environmental performance.
As technology advances, more efficient and cleaner methods of producing power for Wisconsin’s companies are being developed. The Wisconsin Bio Industry Alliance is working to stay ahead of the curve, while continuing to develop opportunities to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels in favor of cleaner burning renewable resources.
What technological challenges does your organization currently face?
Unfortunately there are many misconceptions regarding bio power technologies. The WBIA was formed in part to help educate lawmakers, consumers, the media, and opinion leaders about the positive benefits and economic opportunities of the bio-based industry.
What, if any, technology policy issues are of importance to your organization? (green technology, broadband deployment, privacy, etc.)
Of all the great issues Wired Wisconsin addresses, Green Technology is where the WBIA and Wired Wisconsin have the most synergy. Green tech policy needs to be able to keep up with the growth and development of our industry so our state can take advantage of economic development opportunities.
Why did you decide to partner with Wired Wisconsin?
One of the WBIA’s goals is to break down walls and create alignment among organizations that share a similar vision for bio-based renewable energy, power, and products—Wired Wisconsin is one of those organizations.
