New program to profile environmental impact of mobile devices
A new rating system is set to launch later this year will profile the environment impact of smartphones. The startup, Eco-Rating, has teamed up with AT&T to include sustainability ratings on the packaging on each device from the telecom company.
The mobile devices will be ranked in four categories: Energy efficiency, environmentally preferred materials, responsible end-of-life treatment and environmentally responsible manufacturing. Eco-Rating will also factor how easily the smartphone’s battery can be recycled and reused for future devices.
According to a survey by Deloitte, consumer consciousness of sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Of the 6000 surveyed, 54 percent considered sustainability a decision factor in their purchases.
It will be interesting to see if Eco-Rating’s system will have an impact on new mobile device purchases. Check out the video here to learn more about Eco-Rating and AT&T’s partnership.
