Cisco’s annual Visual Networking Index has projected the increase use of Internet between 2014 and 2015 will be equivalent to all Internet traffic in 2010. The volume of Internet use will be so large by 2015, it will be comparable to downloading every movie ever made every five minutes.
Internet use by mobile devices continues to be one of the most rapidly growing segments. In fact, the use of mobile devices is growing at such a rate that in four years there will be one smartphone, netbook, or tablet for every person alive in 2015. With an expected 26 fold increase in mobile device use over the next four years, there will be a tremendous need to improve wireless infrastructure.
Cisco has also projected a “Netflix” impact by projecting that nearly two-thirds of internet data will be comprised of video in 2015. As video chat and services such as YouTube, Hulu, and Netflix continue to grow, strain will be put on current systems and will force providers to get creative in order to keep pace with consumer demand.
