Job seeking with social media

Employers and job seekers are taking note of the increasingly important role social media has in our lives. While job seekers have been using the Internet to look for openings for some time, social media has become a way for employers to recruit talented applicants. The infographic created by Career Enlightenment illustrates how social media has shaped the job searching process.

United pilots receive iPad flight manuals

United and Continental pilots will soon trade in their paper flight manuals for electronic iPad manuals.  The current paper manual weighs in at 38 pounds and contains over 12,000 pages and is required to be on hand before, during, and after a flight. The new iPad manuals will weigh only 1.5 pounds.

United and Continental are following the footsteps of other airlines including Delta and and Alaska Air which have already switched to paperless manuals. The Federal Aviation Administration began clearing the way for iPad earlier this year when they allowed smaller airplanes to use paperless manuals, followed by commercial airlines.

All pilots for the airline are expected to receive their new iPad by that end of the year.

YouTube and American politics celebrate 5 years

In just five years, YouTube has transformed the way politicians and constituents interact with each other. It has become an outlet for politicians with endless opportunities to message to a wide audiences as well as a way for constituents to stay connected with politicians.

The five year relationship between YouTube and American politics is filled many with highs and lows. From the creation of the White House YouTube channel to the many impersonations of Sarah Palin, we can now watch infinite hours of political clips on YouTube. The White House uploads around 17 videos a week as way a to keep Americans informed while over 92 percent of US House and Senate members have official YouTube channels. There is no doubt that YouTube is playing an increasingly important role in American politics.

Travel apps help ease headaches for the tech-savvy

Traveling, whether for business or pleasure,  always contain unexpected travel woes or expenses that can put a real damper on your trip. Luckily, new smartphone apps aim to help travelers save money and account for the unexpected. Here are some of our favorites:

1.       TravelTracker Pro. Meant to be a personal travel assistant, this app streamlines reservations, expenses, awards programs, directions, and even weather.  The $9.99 is a good investment for those looking to avoid travel frustrations and headaches.

2.       Currency. For those traveling abroad, a good currency converter is vital. Currency contains over 100 countries’ currencies with the most up to date exchange rates to make sure you’re getting the best rate.

3.       Taxi Magic. Can’t hail a cab? No need! Instead, Taxi Magic allows users to request one by simply typing in their location. Not only can one hail a taxi using the app, but users can also track the arrival of the taxi. The app is also good for those who carry little cash as you can charge the fee directly to your card.

Milwaukee Public Library annouces exciting additions

Milwaukee Public Library users will soon have access to laptop computers thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and a Broadband Technology Opportunities Program grant. Six Milwaukee Public Library locations will be given 40 laptops each while 13 libraries will receive improved broadband services. Library director Paula Kiely described the impact of the additions by stating:

“With these laptops, the number of computers available has more than doubled at each participating library, giving customers greater ability to search for jobs, develop their computer skills, search for information and connect to the vast resources found online.”

With the addition of the laptops, the six libraries have hired a technology specialist to provide training and support to library patrons.

The library locations that will be receiving laptops are:

-Atkinson Library, 1960 W. Atkinson Ave.

-Center Street Library, 2727 W. Fond du Lac Ave.

-Forest Home Library, 1432 W. Forest Home Ave.

-Martin Luther King Library, 310 W. Locust St.

-Villard Avenue Library, 3310 W. Villard Ave.

-Washington Park Library, 2121 N. Sherman Blvd.
